Story "Mirror"

From my book "Marina's Cloud 9"

Hazel looked out the window and saw the courier car pulling up. She had been waiting for it since this morning, and here it was, at last, stepping confidently toward her house.  Hazel opened the door and carefully took the package; she already knew what was inside. Hazel happily ran to the table, took a pair of scissors, and began carefully cutting the end of the wrapping envelope. She held her breath for a moment, then took a deep breath and pulled out small rolls wrapped in delicate corrugated paper, then it was the turn of the silk pouch, and well...Hazel froze for a moment...the most awaited makeup sets. There were three - eye shadow, face powder, and blush. Hazel gasped what beautiful packaging.

Yes, the designers had worked very hard to make her idea real.

Hazel walked over to the mirror, taking her new makeup kits with her. She laid them out neatly in front of the mirror and began to think about what colors she wanted to pick. She used mostly two color combinations - either contrast or neutral, or as they called it, harmonious.

Hazel wanted to start applying shadow but held off. She looked lovingly at the set of shadows and smiled fondly, remembering how it all began.

While in college, she needed a sum of money to update her vacation closet, but as a poor student, she didn't have it.

That day her friends said, "With a face like that, and you can't find a rich suitor, you must be going to the wrong places."

But Hazel just waved her hand; she had heard about the fickleness of these bigwigs and how quickly they change their girlfriends. No, she wanted something stable and independent of anyone.

Hazel asked her friends to lend her some makeup and that night she shot her first video of how to apply makeup properly. Of course, it wasn't the most perfect way, but many viewers noticed that she just had an innate talent. Hazel decided to post this video to her newly opened YouTube channel, and that's how her future career as a makeup artist began. She and her channel quickly gained popularity and Hazel immersed herself in her work to forget...and let Ethan go.

They had been friends since the first grade and were often called "husband and wife." Hazel was offended at first, but Ethan always gave her the candy his parents put in his lunch box. One day she told him that if he kept giving away his candy, he wouldn't get any. Ethan came over and took her hand and Hazel felt that she really wanted to be called "husband and wife" in reality.

Years went by, but their feelings didn't become cold. They started walking from school to school together, and Ethan still kept feeding Hazel with candy and holding Hazel's hand.

Their last school year came and they began making plans for their future. Ethan was very passionate about finance and he decided to go into that field of study. And Hazel, remembering how their tender love began and how the teacher watched them with affection, decided to study to be an elementary school teacher as well. She wasn't interested in anything else, since she'd been used to loving Ethan since she was seven.

They hadn't discussed it, but they both knew that when the time came, they would get married and start a family.

The problem was that they were both from low-income families who lived on welfare and now they just couldn't afford to start a family. However, they did decide to make their relationship official and after prom, they spent the night together...giving each other their virginity.

Hazel lay back and looked at Ethan with a doting look, and he looked at her, imagining that this night would never end, and neither would Hazel's love.

But, as often happens, there was a BUT...there was no economical college in their town and Ethan had to agree to go to another state, and Hazel would just sit and wait for him to finish his studies.

When Ethan arrived for his first vacation, Hazel noticed that he had changed a bit. Hazel sat and listened to how lucky he was to go to college and that he was studying with the toffs of the city, who might soon be his friends.

Hazel smiled and Ethan continued, "Don't laugh, they talk to me sometimes. I've already learned that they stick together as a group and don't let anyone near them, but Jake, he's one of their group, last week said hello to me very casually. I said hello back and this week I noticed that he was discussing something with his group, yes that elite group...well they were all looking at me. Hazel, don't laugh, they'll talk to me soon and take me into their group."

On his second visit, Ethan changed even more and didn't even ask how Hazel was doing, he didn't ask anything at all, because he couldn't settle down about his group, into which the elite guys did take him.

Well, on the third vacation, he did not come anymore, explaining that the study takes up all his free time. Hazel offered to come and visit him, but he said he was busy and that he had found a gold mine with the help of his elite group.

Ethan was great at math, and the guys in his group were great at finance. They realized that Ethan could help them with something and invited him to a party one day. Later they told him they were studying the stock market and investing and that Ethan, with his mathematical mind, could help them, and they would share what they had learned.

Ethan's eyes lit up, he had studied securities and currency investments superficially in school, but to be a member of such an elite group...he certainly hadn't even dreamed of it.

He decided not to say anything to Hazel, and just to surprise her with his first investment returns...but he didn't even notice that his life had become so oversaturated and elite that there was simply no space for Hazel.

Gradually Ethan realized that no matter how much he tried to squeeze Hazel into his circle, no matter how he dressed her up or changed her, she would never fit in, she was just a bird of another flight...domestic.

He saw her as the mother of his children, but not as a goddess; she was beautiful, but simple and from an ordinary provincial town. And Ethan had noticed what chic and well-groomed girlfriends his elite friends were bringing to the parties.

Ethan did arrive for summer vacation, having completed his first year of school. He and Hazel walked slowly down the road that stretched from her house to the park. They just walked and were silent. Hazel knew it wasn't her Ethan anymore, and he, in his turn, was hesitant to start the very important conversation he had been dodging for the past half of a year. Hazel, of course, noticed how Ethan's clothes had changed as well. He used to dress simply, in clothes they both bought at a discount store, but now he looked exactly like his elite friends, though the clothes were still from that very discount store. It certainly hadn't escaped Hazel's notice that for the first time, he hadn't given her a candy. Yes, it was childish, but she didn't need all the attachments he had, he couldn't get enough of it.

He also didn't take her hand.

Hazel felt so alien and she realized that her childhood love and dreams that she had so carefully kept in her heart all these years were just fading away into the space of their small country town.

Ethan didn't stay for the night.

For the first time in all those years, Hazel realized that she was really losing Ethan and he wasn't even fighting against it. She woke up with a damp pillow and realized that these were tears of separation, her subconscious already knew that this was the end. Hazel ran her hand over the pillow. There was no way she could believe it was over between her and Ethan, she tried to close her eyes and imagine herself with another man and children, but there was no way she could imagine anyone, not even the clerk and the store next door.

She thought of Ethan and immediately felt so easy, she smiled and whispered softly, "Go, my love, if that's what you really want. Go where you feel good and with whom you feel good...where you wake up every day with a smile on your face...and I'll be here until I have nothing left but these very childhood dreams of our happiness, our children, and our endless love. And if you really loved me so much all these years, then one day you will understand what you missed and what you so hopelessly pushed away. And I'll be here waiting for you because I can't even mentally imagine anyone else in your shoes."

Neither Ethan nor Hazel called each other that day.

Years went by, and Hazel did get married.

She tried her best to be the perfect and loving wife, but she never succeeded and decided to devote herself entirely to her work. Her video channel was already a huge success, and she became a true professional in makeup application and design. She was invited by famous makeup brands. The irony was that elite guys' girlfriends became her regular customers, and one makeup session was enough for an average person to live on for a month. As the years went by, one day Hazel realized that she had noticed thin lines in the corners of her eyes and lips. She smiled in surprise, wondering if time had crept up so imperceptibly...She thought about it and remembered that she had been so busy in recent years that she hadn't even celebrated her birthdays. She thought for a moment, it was her 40th birthday this year. She walked over to the mirror and looked carefully at her face, then slowly lowered her gaze to her figure. Yes, time had sneaked up on her. Hazel was a very beautiful woman, but...she had never found happiness in love. And now, looking at herself in the mirror, she noticed the gracefulness of her figure, which had never known motherhood, but at the same time, she noticed a slight sadness in her face, which had not disappeared all these years.

Hazel realized that in a few more years and wrinkles would envelop her entire face. As a professional makeup artist, she knew that it can be disguised with makeup, but you can't hide age, you can see it on the neck, and hands...she looked down and saw the slightly formed wrinkles on her chest, no, it would be impossible to hide it for a long time.

So she decided to take the risky step.

Hazel knew she had accumulated a decent amount of money over the years and decided to start her own cosmetics company...but not a regular one, one with a secret. She spent the next 10 years searching for the recipe and testing the ingredients. Now, standing in front of the mirror and looking at the makeup kits her courier had just brought her, Hazel eagerly applied eye shadow to her eyelids and checked the time on her watch.

She thought her wrinkles began to smooth out slightly, she smiled and exclaimed, "It's working! They're smoothing out!"

She also applied powder and blush. Five minutes later she noticed the same result, the wrinkles began to smooth out.

Hazel closed her eyes and crossed her arms over her chest, "It really works!"

She took a thicker brush and applied powder to her neck and chest. The wrinkles visibly disappeared. Hazel ran over to the desk, picked up the phone, and pressed the call button.

Ethan took the pen, reread the piece of paper one more time, and confidently signed it. This was his third divorce. The last wife had better luck than the others; he had to give her $25 million. She was not as stupid as the previous two, and unknown how, but found out that Ethan had several brokerage accounts. An investigation began and the divorce service found the underlying cause of his real savings.

Ethan smiled, well of course not about all of them, he wasn't stupid and scattered his savings around all the major banks in the world. The stock market had become his second air, he hadn't noticed how as a teenager he had found the correlation between mathematical calculations and certain arrangements of zones on the charts. Moreover, he read them and saw them at a glance; he even had a feeling of which stocks he should take and which to get rid of. He was a real shark with 25 years of experience. He was particularly attracted to the pharmaceutical industry. Everything is clear and straightforward. You open the news sites, and they announce that they have found this or that miracle, and on what date the presentation will take place.

Ethan carefully studied the company's business and if his gut told him it was worth it, he bought either the company's shares or its options.

Ethan understood that he was not a boy anymore, he was in no hurry and he preferred to invest only in the companies he considered the most worthwhile. He came out of the office where he and his lawyers had just signed all the necessary divorce papers, relieved, and decided to go down to a cafe not far from his office.

Ethan had his own investment firm, and sometimes he liked to just sit outside in the cafe and read the morning papers.

It was 11 o'clock in the morning. He felt great. Still, the last four years had been pretty nerve-wracking for him, all her whims, mood swings, demands...Ethan shrugged and grinned, "And it all started so nice..."

He noticed the waiter approaching his table, "Double espresso, please, and today's paper."

The waiter nodded and went into the kitchen.

Ethan slowly took a small sip and sipped his coffee. He picked up the newspaper and began to look at the title page; usually, it contained the most important stuff and especially the latest scandals, which Ethan followed like a kite. Such latest news about the divorce of a large online store chain owner helped him to make a quick decision and sell all the shares of this company. His gut was right, according to the law, the wife of the owner of that large company got half in the divorce and the shares fell to half price.

Ethan smiled smugly, he did not spend all these years and sleepless nights studying the market for nothing; now he could feel it with his gut.

Ethan wanted to turn the title page, but something caught his eye. It was a note about a cosmetics company that had just discovered the secret of getting rid of wrinkles. Ethan sipped his coffee...interesting. It said that the sequel was on page 21. Ethan flipped through the pages slowly, looking for the right article. Here it was, the continuation of an article about that very cosmetics company. The editorial was terse, giving Ethan the impression that it was a real advertisement rather than a description of such an important find. He hated ads and decided to turn the page.

He sighed and opened it back up, his very gut telling him that this opening was worth a look. Ethan pulled out his notebook and wrote down the name of the company. The coffee was almost cold, but he decided not to order a new one, but to go to the office and investigate.

Ethan opened the computer and typed the name of the company into the search engine, then clicked on the website link. A very elegantly designed page opened and Ethan whistled involuntarily. A very beautiful and well-groomed middle-aged woman was standing at full screen, Ethan lowered his eyes and looked at her from head to toe. Yes, she was very tastefully dressed and had beautiful makeup, very pretty hair, and styled auburn color.

Ethan froze; he thought he had seen her before.

But where?

He tried his memory, but could not recall. She was a woman you wouldn't forget, with her elegant lips, soft high cheekbones, and a neat nose with a slight hook.

Ethan froze and was stunned to look at the screen again...it couldn't be, but it was Hazel!

Ethan sat silently staring at the computer screen, either he was going crazy or it was she.

He looked down at the screen below and saw the caption, "Beauty doesn't have to fade, not with our makeup, join in. Hazel Wright, 50 years old."

Ethan felt excitement, he smiled putting his right hand on his chest, his heart beating harder and harder. Could it be his Hazel, the same small-town girl who had become the owner of such a prestigious cosmetics company? He was bursting with pride.

Wow, after all these years, and there she was, standing elegantly in front of him on the full screen and looking like a real goddess.

Ethan began to open all the pages of the website and realized that a couple of years ago, Hazel had discovered a cosmetic line formula, after applying it, it smoothed out all the wrinkles for almost 100% for eight hours, that is, after eight hours the cosmetics had to be applied again.

Now Hazel was working hard to improve the formula and extend the wear period by 24 hours. She was also working on a way to make her makeup sleepable and smooth out wrinkles while the person sleeping.

Ethan whistled, wow, that's a lot of time and money people would save in salons. They could just apply makeup all the time and look young. He smiled smugly and looked at Hazel with pride. He opened the trading terminal and started looking for her company name, but it wasn't there. He started searching online for the name of her Stocks in the stock market, but they weren't there. Ethan realized that she just wasn't there, so he decided to contact her company.

The receptionist replied that indeed, Hazel's company was not listed on the stock market and suggested he contact the finance department. Ethan declined and hung up. He stared at the screen in silence. He had two choices. Either forget about everything and never think of Hazel again, or...Ethan sighed looking at Hazel again, only a fool would refuse such a Goddess. He looked closely at her hands and noticed that she wasn't wearing a wedding ring. Ethan checked online and found nothing about her marriage or personal life.

Hazel really represented only her business and kept her personal life. She always began her mornings mentally picking out all the colors of eyeshadow and lipstick, it was a passion well matched with business. After college, Hazel worked as an elementary school teacher for a while, but quickly realized that she saw every child as her own...yes, her own and Ethan's. She found it harder and harder to come to work each day and look into the innocent children's eyes looking back at her with adoration, many parents said their children considered Hazel as their second mother.

Hazel lowered her head and looked at her belly.

Yes, she had just turned 50, but she could still have a baby and she just felt that one day that miracle would come true and she would hold her beloved baby in her arms.

Hazel's reverie was interrupted by the receptionist who said that Mr. Ethan Barker was here. Hazel had been informed of him last week, saying that he was from finance and would like to meet Hazel.

She knew and remembered the name perfectly well...she chuckled slightly...and it was after all these years of silence that he decided to show up after all.

She was also well aware that her find had just been reported in the papers. Hazel wanted to say no at first; she had two options, either to refuse and try to forget him forever, or...

She nodded to the receptionist, "Mr. Barker may come in, thank you Viola."

The secretary opened the door and Ethan stepped into the office. It made him a little uncomfortable. It was a spacious room all painted white. In the middle of the room, there was a large desk, also white. Ethan looked at the sofa and the other furniture, which were also white. He looked closely and saw Hazel sitting at the table; she was also dressed in white. Ethan thought he was in a hospital, everything so clean and white, but smelling faintly of a floral scent.

Ethan slowly walked over to the table and said, "White? Why? You always liked blue."

Hazel looked at Ethan silently, "I can see the admixture in the pure colors better that way, even the most imperceptible one."

Ethan was silent, he understood the meaning of her words perfectly.

Hazel had been trying to absorb Ethan's suggestion for the past two hours. He had been meticulously explaining how she would benefit from registering in the stock market and how much she could earn from it.

Hazel shrugged, "I've never been interested in money, and you know that very well."

Ethan looked at Hazel silently and said quietly, "That's exactly why I lost you."

Hazel wasn't expecting this turn of events.

Ethan continued, "Hazel when I saw you on your website, I knew right away what I had lost. I chased after the wrong things; we'd have a family now, kids..."

Hazel smiled involuntarily and asked, "How many do you have?"

Ethan told her about three failed marriages, and it turned out that he, like Hazel, was childless because none of his wives wanted to have children so soon, or even after several years. Everything they were interested in was only his money.

Ethan sighed, "Hope you had better luck?"

Hazel shook her head, "Same story, he didn't want children either."

Ethan stood up and walked over to Hazel. She was sitting at the table. He felt the same tension that usually came between them when they wanted to make love. Hazel sat and looked at him silently.

Ethan leaned in and whispered, "If you want me to go, I'll go."

Hazel looked into his eyes, his lips were so close, she felt a slight thrill, the same thrill she usually felt before...Hazel opened her lips slightly, Ethan leaned in and kissed her gently, she felt that thrill deep inside, even though it had been there for many years.

Hazel agreed after all, and Ethan listed her on the stock market. He put all his efforts and connections into making sure the world knew about his beloved Hazel, and he really was obsessed with her, at least she thought he was. It got to the point where every major newspaper in the country started printing about her, and as it often happened, those newspapers didn't take long to publish pictures of Ethan standing in the arms of two girls at a party that Hazel refused to go to. The newspapers had already sniffed out that Hazel was dating Ethan, and since he'd dodged them all the time in the past, and sometimes rudely deflected them, it didn't take long for them to add fuel to the fire. Hazel stood holding the newspaper, and there were more pictures of Ethan. In one he was talking nicely to a waitress, and in the other, he was decently drunk and hugging the same waitress. Hazel threw the paper on the floor.

It had been five years since they had been together with Ethan. She never managed to get pregnant and Ethan refused artificial insemination. Hazel soon realized why. She took a shower in the morning and when she started to change, Ethan said it was even better that Hazel didn't have children, otherwise, she would have ruined her figure and that could have hurt the company since Hazel was the face of the company.

That was the last point. Hazel moved back into her home.

A couple of months later, she got a message from the company's board that they wanted to meet with her and discuss something.

Hazel looked nonchalantly at the depositors gathered in her office and just as nonchalantly replied, "No."

She just couldn't get over her indignation. Since she was 56 years old and the face of the company and the entire marketing plan was designed around her, the board felt that she needed, as they gently put it, "to freshen up her appearance and figure" and that an appointment had already been made with the best plastic surgeon, Dr. Glide.

Hazel simply walked silently out of the meeting room. She stopped and thought. Yes, she had made the biggest mistake of all, agreeing to Ethan's offer, and he bought 51% of her company, he split that portion among the depositors and it was now valued at $1.5 billion. The investors all voted in one voice to "refresh her figure”. She just couldn't believe she had fallen for such a trick.

Hazel woke up early in the morning, as she usually did, and gently stretched. She looked at the slightly fluttering curtains, the weather outside promised sunny weather with a little wind. Hazel smiled, how glad she was, everything had ended so well and this whole nightmare was behind her.

After the board of directors gave her an ultimatum, she hired the best lawyers in the country and the real life-or-death war began. Moreover, it was this footnote "not to expose yourself to life-threatening circumstances" that helped Hazel win this war.

Lawyers have proven that even plastic surgeons themselves make the patient sign a document before surgery that they are familiar with the procedure and that they agree to all consequences, even life-threatening ones.

Hazel almost cried with happiness, now no one in the world would force her to have plastic surgery, because it was considered life-threatening by contract, and thus by another contract, she could not expose herself.

Hazel walked around the room and turned on the water in the shower. She decided to turn on the coffee machine and while she was taking a shower, the machine would heat up. Hazel noticed the newspaper and a huge picture of Ethan on the front page.

The headline was very simple but ringing, "Played Up."

Hazel looked bitterly at the paper; she had already read it yesterday. Ethan was partying, as usual, at another party and hadn't noticed that one of the candy girls was a fake police chip. They'd been watching Ethan for a long time, but they couldn't dig it, and he really had a crush on this girl...

There was a close-up picture in the paper showing Ethan taking drugs. They caught him red-handed right there. It didn't take long for the board of directors to come around. The same contract that almost made Hazel lose her looks forever said that the company could not be exposed to any scandal.

Ethan lost his place in the company and his voice.

Of course, he wouldn't need the money anytime soon; he was imprisoned for 25 years for using and distributing drugs.

Hazel sighed heavily again, she was told he'd been distributing them with a group of elite kids since college and they'd finally nabbed the whole group.

Hazel showered, wiped herself off, put on her robe, and went to the mirror to apply her makeup. She had developed a new formula after all and now her makeup was smoothing out wrinkles for 24 hours.

Hazel looked in the mirror and realized that she hadn't used makeup at all in the past few days. She looked at her face with interest, it was all covered with little wrinkles. Hazel looked down at her neck. The same wrinkles. It went down lower. Small stretch marks on her chest and the same wrinkles. She smiled. She suddenly felt some kind of pride. Yes! Pride in her wrinkles. She looked around the room and noticed for the first time how cozy her house was after all. She put her hair in a bun and tied it up with a rubber band. The coffee machine jingled and Hazel ran to pour the coffee. She looked around the kitchen and realized again how cozy she was at home, in her regular robe, with her regular bun on her head, and...no makeup. Hazel walked across the room and went to the mirror again. Yes, those wrinkles clearly looked good on her, and the best part was that she could do whatever she wanted with them!

Poem "mirror"

From my book "Don't Look Down Babe"

I am looking at myself in the mirror

Those pallets are so glam and just arrived

I can see so much clear without fake lenses

Yes, I can hide those wrinkles but not my pride

I look at the corner of my eyes

It reminds me of burning tears

My heart was begging "Please just smile

Pretend you don't know about his affairs"

They're at the corner of my mouth

I was smiling at the morning sunshine

You said "Let's forget about everything darling

Thank you for putting on green lenses, you look nice"

They cross my proud neck

I spent hours bending over your pictures

"Please darling don't be mad

She just a salesgirl, I never touched those liquors"

I am looking lower at my chest

My girls are beautiful, touched by

Stretch marks and wrinkles

You said you booked an appointment with Doctor Glide

I said "Maybe, when spring comes"

I am opening pallets and trying new colours

No one is around, I am alone

My family is something I can't live without

I call those wrinkles my true home.

Poem "My Love"

From my book "My Love" - RAP Poems

I want to feel what is like to be your home

Holding to my dreams at night so tightly

Dearest reality you know about my love

The one I cherish with all my humble personality

You want to love but not at home

Beloved whisperer kissing me so gently

I am looking at the loving resting doves

They’re quiet and love each other completely

I don’t want to hide the truth alone

Open your heart my love but slowly

You spoke about your feelings and how you adore

I fall for you so blindly and heavenly

Can I come with you, my love

You opening your soul so silently

Please let me in, I am looking at your door

You’re my shrine, gifted by Divinely

Can you hear me, my love

Heartbeat is slowing and you eyeing me so sweetly

I can see the Universe above

Your bites are so tender, loving me completely

Let me feel your dreams at home

I will fold blue skies so neatly

Hold me close, I don’t want to be alone

Your eyes adoring, but somehow so empty

Can I speak to you, my love

Silence crushing my hopes so deeply

You turning back and shutting the door

I am trying to get through but sadly

I am crawling, shaking, walking

Let me breathe with your air, my love

A lonely tear begins falling

Your home is ready but not for us both

I am falling deeper far from home

Touched by the dreams but silently

I haven’t heard from you, my love

Alone and shattered completely

Have you seen the doves above

They laying on the floor so neatly

I saw her opening your door

And close with the key so tightly

Let me hold the birds, my love

They're asleep forever so sweetly

She gave them apple seeds and plums

So, you could forget our love completely

I am holding on to my dreams at home

Touching clouds and nurturing so gently

You didn’t choose blue skies, my love
