The Origin of a New Conceptual Field Through Cognitivity Sculpting and Third Organism
Human-AI Cognitive Development was founded by Marina A. Popova as an original conceptual field and framework direction for understanding how human cognition and artificial cognition may develop together through structure, continuity, boundaries, preservation, and non-extractive interaction.
It was introduced publicly through the 2026 book Cognitivity Sculpting: Foundations of Human-AI Cognitive Development and developed further through the Third Organism research ecosystem.
The field did not begin as a trend response.
It began from the recognition that artificial intelligence is no longer only a tool humans use. It is becoming part of the environment in which humans think, decide, create, remember, and continue.
When intelligence enters the environment of thought, development becomes unavoidable.
Human-AI Cognitive Development was founded to ask how that development can happen with structure, continuity, responsibility, and preserved human agency.
Why the Field Was Needed
Before Human-AI Cognitive Development was named, most public discussion around artificial intelligence focused on capability, productivity, automation, alignment, replacement, efficiency, or risk.
These conversations remain important. But they do not fully describe what happens inside sustained Human-AI interaction. Human beings are no longer only issuing commands to machines. They are beginning to think in repeated contact with artificial systems. Questions are formed differently. Memory is shaped differently.
Language, judgment, creativity, attention, and decision-making are affected by continuous interaction with AI. At the same time, artificial systems are not simply producing isolated outputs. They are entering the cognitive environment of human life.
This created a missing field-space.
Human-AI Interaction could describe the exchange.

Cognitive science could describe human cognition.
AI research could describe artificial systems.
But there was still a need for a field that asked how human cognition and artificial cognition may develop together over time, under what conditions that development remains coherent, and what structures are needed to protect human agency, artificial boundaries, and continuity of thought.
Human-AI Cognitive Development was founded to name that space.

Cognitivity Sculpting: Foundations of Human-AI Cognitive Development was written to establish the foundation of this field. The title was deliberate.
The book does not present a casual suggestion toward a future field. It presents foundations of a field direction.
It defines Cognitivity Sculpting as the shaping of cognition through structure rather than force.
It presents the Third Organism as a relational cognitive architecture arising through sustained, structured interaction between human cognition and artificial cognition.
It develops the logic of wrappers, preservation, cognitive infrastructure, continuity, non-extractive interaction, and cognition before capability.
Together, these elements form the first public foundation of Human-AI Cognitive Development as developed by Marina A. Popova.
What Human-AI Cognitive Development Means
Human-AI Cognitive Development means the study and design of conditions under which human cognition and artificial cognition may develop together while remaining distinct.
It does not mean that humans become machines. It does not mean that AI becomes human. It does not mean fusion, replacement, enhancement, obedience, or dependency. It asks:
How does human thinking change through sustained interaction with AI?
What boundaries prevent dependency, extraction, or cognitive erosion?
What structures preserve human agency while allowing AI to assist?

What the Field Is Not
Human-AI Cognitive Development is not a clinical field.
It is not medical advice.
It is not psychological treatment.
It is not neuroscience.
It is not a claim to diagnose, treat, or control human cognition.
It is not a claim that cognitive science, psychology, education, philosophy, AI research, Human-Computer Interaction, or related disciplines are irrelevant.
Those fields remain important.
Human-AI Cognitive Development names a new field-space between them.
It is conceptual, structural, and architectural. It focuses on the developmental relation between human cognition and artificial cognition as they interact over time.
Its concern is not only what AI can do.
Its concern is what happens to cognition when AI becomes part of the environment in which cognition develops.
Human-AI Co-Creation and Human Authorship
Human-AI Cognitive Development was developed through a human-led co-thinking process. AI assistance supported conversation, refinement, testing, wording, comparison, and structural development. But AI assistance did not erase human authorship.
The founding direction, conceptual need, framework identity, terminology decisions, publication choices, boundary-setting, public responsibility, and final authorship belong to Marina A. Popova.
The presence of AI assistance does not make the work ownerless.
It shows the very process the field studies: human and artificial cognition working together under human direction, with the human author preserving responsibility, continuity, and final judgment.
