September 12, 2026 - Neurofuturism Is Not Human-AI Cognitive Development: Why Brain Readiness Should Not Be Confused with Structure-First Human-AI Cognitive Development

This Development Note records a boundary distinction between Neurofuturism and Human-AI Cognitive Development.

The purpose of this note is not to criticize Neurofuturism, neuroscience, psychology, human readiness research, leadership research, or any researcher working in adjacent areas.

Neurofuturism appears to focus on the future of the brain, behaviour, psychology, intuition, adaptation, leadership, and human readiness in response to technological and AI-driven change. UNSW publicly describes Professor Joel Pearson as the “world’s first Neuro Futurist,” Director of the Future Minds Lab, Deputy Director of Human Readiness at the UNSW AI Institute, and an ARC Future Fellow. UNSW BusinessThink describes neuro-futurism as a combination of neuroscience, psychology, and technology futurism used to examine how technologies such as artificial intelligence affect the human brain, mental health, and behaviour.

That is an adjacent future-facing direction.

But it is not Human-AI Cognitive Development.

Human-AI Cognitive Development, as founded and authored by Marina A. Popova, is a structure-first field concerned with how human cognition must develop beside increasingly capable AI.

It is not primarily a neuroscience forecast.

It is not a behavioural-adaptation model.

It is not a leadership-readiness trend.

It is not a brain-readiness framework.

It is not the study of how humans psychologically adjust to technological change.

Human-AI Cognitive Development asks a different structural question:

What must human cognition become beside AI so the human remains active, coherent, authoring, responsible, and capable of thinking with AI without surrendering thinking to AI?

This distinction matters because adjacent future-facing language can easily blur fields.

“Human readiness for AI” may ask how people adapt to technological change.

Human-AI Cognitive Development asks how cognition develops structurally when AI becomes part of thinking, communication, authorship, decision-making, learning, and continuity.

Neurofuturism may study what AI does to the brain, behaviour, stress, intuition, mental health, leadership, or social adaptation.

Human-AI Cognitive Development studies the structure of the Human-AI relation itself: how the human remains the thinker, how AI participation is bounded, how cognition is protected from outsourcing, how authorship remains visible, and how development can occur without collapse into dependence, automation, or cognitive erosion.

The difference is not cosmetic.

A readiness model may prepare a person for change.

A structure-first developmental field must ask whether the person remains cognitively intact while change enters the thinking process.

A neuroscience-facing future framework may observe, measure, or forecast human responses.

Human-AI Cognitive Development defines the structural conditions under which human cognition can continue developing beside AI without being replaced by AI capability.

This Development Note therefore clarifies:

Brain readiness is not the same as cognitive architecture.

Human adaptation is not the same as Human-AI Cognitive Development.

Neurofuturism is not Human-AI Cognitive Development.

The boundary is simple:

Neurofuturism may study how humans adapt to the technological future.
Human-AI Cognitive Development defines how human cognition must remain structurally active beside AI.
