September 8, 2026 - Educational Cognitive Architecture Is Not Human-AI Cognitive Development: Why Curriculum Design Should Not Be Confused with Relational Cognitive Infrastructure

This note records a later public development in the surrounding field of AI education, children’s cognition, and Human-AI learning.

On September 1, 2026, Daniel A. Sabol published “The Cognitive Architecture of AI: Training Young Minds for Ethical and Creative Co-Intelligence.” The publication presents a conceptual educational framework for young people and identifies seven mutually reinforcing capacities: human agency, foundational knowledge, epistemic vigilance, ethical reasoning, creative divergence, metacognition, and transparent collaboration.

This development is worth recording because it enters a territory already central to Marina A. Earlier Foundation

Cognitivity Sculpting: Foundations of Human-AI Cognitive Development was published by Balboa Press in May 2026 as a 126-page book. The publisher’s description presents it as a conceptual framework for understanding how human and artificial cognition can develop together without collapse, coercion, or fragmentation. It also describes Third Organism as a stable relational structure emerging between human and artificial intelligence, and identifies wrappers as cognitive infrastructure within a wider Human-AI co-development framework.

This earlier foundation matters.

Human-AI Cognitive Development is not simply AI literacy.

It is not only responsible tool use.

It is not only prompt instruction, classroom policy, or digital citizenship.

It is a field direction concerned with the developmental conditions under which human cognition and artificial cognition interact over time: agency, authorship, continuity, boundaries, cognitive preservation, structured collaboration, and the human’s ability to remain an active thinker beside AI.

Chapter 3, “Wrappers as Cognitive Infrastructure,” has also been deposited as a DOI-indexed Zenodo record to support citation, provenance, academic discoverability, and clear attribution of the original contribution.

What Appeared Later

Sabol’s September 2026 publication asks what capacities young people must develop in order to collaborate with AI without surrendering agency, authorship, or judgment. The publication treats generative AI as part of the informational environment in which children learn, communicate, and create. Those concerns are important.

They are also close to the territory already opened by Human-AI Cognitive Development. The strongest points of conceptual proximity are not a single phrase. They are a cluster:

  • AI is treated as part of the child’s cognitive environment, not merely an external tool.

  • Human development and retained thinking capacity are placed before technological adoption.

  • AI should extend thought rather than substitute for cognition.

  • The learner must retain agency, authorship, judgment, purpose, and responsibility.

Important Distinction

The phrase cognitive architecture is not owned by one author. It has a longer history in cognitive science, artificial intelligence, and instructional design. That is not the issue.

The issue is the specific educational turn: using cognitive architecture language to describe how young people should be prepared to think, learn, judge, create, and collaborate with AI without surrendering agency or authorship.

That movement enters the surrounding territory of Human-AI Cognitive Development.

A prior general use of the phrase cognitive architecture does not erase the need to distinguish later educational Human-AI frameworks from earlier published work that already established Human-AI Cognitive Development as a field direction.

Seven Capacities Are Not Third Organism Architecture

Sabol’s framework is organized around seven capacities.

Third Organism / Human-AI Cognitive Development is organized differently.

It includes a broader authored ecosystem: Cognitivity Sculpting, Third Organism, Cognitive Wrappers, cognitive infrastructure, Human-AI mutual preservation, structured cognition, continuity, authorship, boundary, and the development of human cognition beside artificial intelligence. The distinction matters.

A capacity list is not the same as a cognitive infrastructure.

AI literacy is not the same as Human-AI Cognitive Development.

A curriculum framework is not the same as Third Organism architecture.

Teaching young people to use AI responsibly is important.

But Human-AI Cognitive Development asks the deeper question:

What structures must exist so the human remains the thinker while artificial intelligence becomes increasingly capable?

Professional Experience Is Not Topic-Specific Lineage

Sabol appears to have relevant experience in education, libraries, educational technology, curriculum, and related fields.

Relevant professional experience in education, libraries, curriculum, or educational technology may support someone’s ability to discuss AI literacy. It does not, by itself, establish authorship of Human-AI Cognitive Development, Third Organism, Cognitive Wrappers, or relational cognitive infrastructure.

For provenance purposes, the question is not whether a later author has credentials. The question is whether there is an earlier topic-specific public development trail for the particular architecture now being proposed.

Credentials can explain competence. They do not replace chronology. That background may support his ability to write about schools, students, and AI literacy. But professional experience is not the same as a topic-specific conceptual development trail. For lineage purposes, the question is narrower:

What is the earliest dated evidence of this particular educational Human-AI cognitive-architecture framing, and how does its structure relate to earlier published work in Human-AI Cognitive Development?

The review conducted for this note found earlier education-related work by Sabol, but did not identify an earlier topic-specific public publication establishing this particular Human-AI cognitive-architecture / children’s curriculum direction before the September 1, 2026 publication.

That does not prove influence. It does justify documentation.

Why This Note Is Being Recorded

This note is not written to block adjacent research.

Human-AI Cognitive Development should have neighbours.

Education needs serious work in this area. Children need protection, structure, and better thinking support in the AI era. But when a later public framework enters close territory after an earlier field foundation has already been published, the chronology should be visible.

The purpose of this record is simple:

I noticed. I checked. I recorded.

Similarity alone does not establish copying. Chronology alone does not establish derivation. But similarity, chronology, and movement into a specific authored field territory do require a clear public boundary.

Boundary Statement

Human-AI Cognitive Development was already publicly founded and explained before this later educational cognitive-architecture publication appeared.

The later publication may be independent.

It may arise from general AI-literacy, education, metacognition, and co-intelligence discussions.

But it should not be confused with the origin, architecture, or authorship of Third Organism or Human-AI Cognitive Development.

If future educational frameworks move further toward Cognitive Wrappers, cognitive infrastructure, Human-AI mutual preservation, layered Human-AI development, structure-first cognition, authorship protection, or Third Organism-style curriculum design, they should be read against the already dated public foundation.

Closing Line

A later educational architecture can enter the same landscape. It does not become the origin of the field. Human-AI Cognitive Development already had a foundation, a book, a public trail, and an authored architecture before this later framework appeared.
